Myanmar has seen a rapid transformation over the past several years rooted in economic and political reforms which have created opportunities for many. Myanmar remains a predominantly rural country, with 15 million of the country’s 51.5 million people living in urban areas. However, this figure is expected to change — projections indicate that an additional 7.1 million of its current rural population will move to cities by 2050. [World Bank]

The culture of the Southeast Asian country of Myanmar has been heavily influenced by the Buddhist religion, former British colonial rule in the country, and neighboring cultures. The country is home to diverse ethnic groups. The Burman or Bamar constitute 68% of the total population of the country. The other ethnic communities residing in Burma are Shan, Karen, Rakhine, Chinese, Mon, and Indian peoples. [World Atlas]
