Audi AR Heads Up Display: Navigating into Tomorrow

Audi, famous for its stylish, tech-forward German vehicles for decades, continues to push the boundaries of in-car technologies with its new Q4 e-tron. “e-tron” is Audi-speak for “electric” making the small cross-over a future-facing EV option. On its higher trim levels, buyers will be able to opt for an Augmented Reality (AR)-based heads up display that brings safety and navigation aids into a wide field of view ahead of the car (from the driver’s viewpoint). Animations will include turn by turn directions, lane assist notifications and more.

Description

Driving combines a complex set of skills that somehow feel seamless after some practice. However, even the slightest distraction can disrupt a seasoned driver, potentially exposing them or others to great risk.There are numerous situations wherein clear but unobtrusive assistance can enhance our ability to complete complex, difficult or dangerous tasks much more effectively.

You’ve been tasked with creating the next generation of augmented reality assistant for one of three fields: Agriculture, Construction or Healthcare. What specific tasks within your chosen field would benefit the most from an informative overlay in AR? What dangers might be mitigated with this assistance? What new opportunities are created by adding this tool to workers’ day-to-day?

  • identify specific workers/class of workers within your selected field
  • list at least two complex tasks typically completed by these workers
  • establish where guidance could be provided via AR
  • create a mockup of the AR interface and hardware (optional)
